The chief herb, ren shen, which has a sweet flavor and warm nature, has the effect of benefiting vital energy, promoting spleen function and nourishing the stomach. The deputy, bai zhu, which is bitter in taste and warm in nature, promots the spleen function of drying dampness. Fu ling, chen pi, and ban xia are the assistant herbs. Fu ling eliminates dampness and strengthens the spleen, and reinforces the effect of bai zhu to eliminate dampness and strengthens the spleen function. Chen pi regulates the stomach qi, facilitates the digestion of tonifying herbs, and contributes to the qi-raising action of the formula. Ban xia dries dampness, expels phlegm, and directs rebellious stomach qi to descend. Zhi Gan cao, the envoy, benefits vital energy, warms the middle burner, and moderates the potency of all drugs in the prescription.
