What Does the SPF of Sunscreen Really Mean?

SPF is only one factor in choosing the right sunscreen. Other important factors include: Buying a non-oil based sunscreen, Looking for antioxidants added. Blocks both UVA & UVB radiation

SPF measures how long you can stay in the sun before you will turn red from sunburn. An SPF of 25 means you can stay out in the sun 25 times longer than if you did not use sunscreen before you will burn

SPF of 25 blocks 96% of sun’s rays while an SPF of 50 blocks 98% (just 2 percent more) – In other words, higher is not significantly better

UVA radiation is the cause of sunburn, but UVB is what is linked to melanoma (the most dangerous kind of skin cancer)

Always look for a sunscreen that blocks both UVA & UVB radiation

Psoriasis Drug Potentially Life-Threatening Side Effects

Psoriasis is a skin condition characterized by dry, flaky, irritated skin

One class of drug used to treat psoriasis is called a monoclonal antibody, which belongs in a class called immunosuppressants

Recent research warns that the use of one particular drug called efalizumab (Raptiva) has been linked with life-threatening infections such as bacterial sepsis and viral meningitis

It doesn’t make sense for these drugs to be used as a first line treatment when the side effects can be life-threatening

There are natural ways to treat and prevent psoriasis. See the psoriasis protocol for details (link in article)
